Hello and welcome to my latest attempt at knowledge sharing.
This newsletter/series of articles is very personal to me as it highlights an area of life I am very passionate about; career and career advancement- so passionate that I launched a podcast dedicated to this.
So why should you take career advice from me?
Well, because
I heard, that only a fool learns from their experience when they can freely access information.
I have enough experience to share with fresh graduates and undergraduates
I’m kind 🌚
I graduated from university in October 2021 with enough experience to get into a Nigerian entry-level role (for context, by entry-level I am not referring to an internship- even though internships in Nigeria are described as entry-level)
During my undergraduate days, I invested time in preparing for a career post-university, even becoming the first Students of LinkedIn campus ambassador of my university (the pandemic made it impossible to host our on-campus LinkedIn event so we opted for free online CV reviews for students), I applied to series of internships until I got my lucky break (thank God! lol), I continued working ever since then in series of internships and support roles here and there (my CV literally has only half of the work I have done, which is something I will talk about either in an article or on the podcast)
I am really grateful for the opportunity I had to work as an undergraduate, and all the referrals I got based on my work ethic (or lack of? 😂 I mean who’s to say I made a good impression everywhere 🤷♀️) asides from the experience and the money 😉 (something else I’ll discuss), they made my CV look good (case in point, I was considered for 1/3 of MBB based off my CV alone- but I flunked the test 🙈. Something else I will talk about)
Even with all of this experience, nothing prepared me for work as a graduate.
After 4 months, I was ready to give up 😂 but my surname is Jagun 😪, nothing more ironic than a Jagun giving up halfway (except NYSC camp which I gracefully gave up on after 6 of 21 days)
There is a lot to look forward to in this newsletter series.
I will be sharing tips on how I adjusted to “earning my keep”, soft skills I had to learn along the way, dealing with difficult colleagues😂, handling feedback, upskilling while at a job, and all the things they told us in university that ended up being true- and false 😅.
Stick around, next week, I will write on the surprising elements of working as a graduate. Subscribe to this newsletter if you like free knowledge. 😉
Can't wait to read the coming posts!
Looking forward to learning from you and your experiences, I'm sure this would be an impactful experience
